    Mage guide

    Hi!

I was looking for a mage guide, where to lvl fast? Basic equipment?

And i never played mage so i dont really known how to .

IS It normal to run out of MP? The only thing to do is wait the regen?

The other thing i have in mind IS how to use the shortcuts F5-12. Also i read you can add some spells to the whell, can someone explain how to.

    Thank you very much!

    Re: Mage guide

Haven't played a mage since about 2002 so I can't really answer the hunting area and equipment questions.

For MP regen, there are items and sets of items that increase the rate of regeneration.  Mana potions do the same.  There is also a spell called Meditate that increases mana regeneration, but you can't do anything after casting it (like move, cast another spell, etc.) or it goes away.

And yes, you need to strategize about expending mana because all you can do is wait for it to regenerate (Edit: or use Mana Drain, see post below).  Note that your wimpy mage bolt consumes very little mana and the damage scales up as your Spell Power increases.  So attack groups of creatures with area of effect spells, then finish off stragglers with you weapon or mage bolt.

You have three sets of hotkeys on the bottom right of screen.  F1 will get you to the first set, F2 the second, F3 the third.

Just drop icons and items from your inventory into the empty hotkey boxes, and those spells/items will activate when that Fkey is pressed or held down.

Whatever hotkey icon is selected will have a golden band around it.  (Note that if you press Alt + F3 you can also toggle the box to the left of the hotkey area to put additional icons into to be activated, and the golden band can also be on these icons).  When you press or press and hold the mouse wheel it will activate whichever icon is selected (has the golden band around it).

    Re: Mage guide

    Hello,

Mage is going to level up using area of effect spells constantly. Gather groups of monsters and use the spell firestorm to kill them in groups (until you can afford meteor stike spellbook...about 25m). Since you have soft AC, you'll want to keep immune to harm on until you have better gear. You should be hunting in Giran Prison 2f and using random teleport to keep moving. Other good spots are TOI 10f or TOI 24f. A lot of mages level up in Lastabad Basement after 55+, too. SKT Training Dungeon 4f is pretty good exp too, especially until lvl 50. Plus, you make a lot of money there collecting nzel/ndai and selling all the junk drops like axes and banded mail (put them on a passive summon to reduce weight)

You'll want to get as much MPR gear as possible. Ancient Robe (about 2m), Crystal Staff (free), Mana Cloak (from lvl 45 quest) or SIlver Cloak (about 8m). The 'New King' set is a pretty good inexpensive starter gear set for mages. Each piece of that set is like 200k or free. Elder/Succubus Doll (about 10m). Get a Black Wizard Staff (free?) for the +2sp. Eventually you'll want Black Wizard Amulet for +2 int, too.(about 10m) This is pretty basic gear, but it will get you leveled to 60+ easily. Most impantly is getting the Meteor spellbook, because it's gonna help kill A LOT faster.

As you are hunting and running out of MP, you want to use the spell 'mana drain' constantly on the monsters. You can suck a lot of mp out quickly. That's how you reduce your 'downtime' waiting for mp to regen. However, eventually, you will probably need to sit and wait for mp to regen every now and again. Especially at the beginning. Later on, with gear and meteor strike, it won't feel so bad. Mage is one of the easiest classes to level up, because you don't need a lot of gear to start hunting harder spots since your so spellpower dependent. Just gather, firestorm, mana drain, repeat. Hope this helps!

    Re: Mage guide

This one time, at mage camp, I used a staff of mana ..... to continue hunting.

I'm no expert, but I'll do my best to give you some pointers to get you started.

Create your mage, typically 18 INT, 18 CON, 16 WIS or 18 INT 16 CON 18 WIS (18 WIS will give you a bit more mana and regen, 18 CON will help keep you alive until you're more comfortable. You can also candle later, that's another explanation. Suffice to say, by starting out, you can't 'ruin' your character).

You enter the game, contratuations, your mage is born.

Remember, to self cast, double, or triple-click spells to cast them on yourself. You'll learn which ones you need to double-click, and which ones you need to triple-click.

    - Equip all your starting gear
    - Use your haste potion, use your scroll of polymorph and select succubus (winged puple lady)
    - Hotkey your potions and scrolls and spells (use ebolt as your primary damage dealer)
    - Use CTRL + X and select your ebolt spell. This will allow you to click cast it, without having to reclick the hotkey.
    - Use -warp 6 and slowly step out of town to the east, SLOWLY.
    - Walk up to Lyra and begin contracting with her.
    - NUKE the first orc you see with ebolt. Then the next; then the next etc. Be sure to tap your potions as needed.
    - Keep killing orcs until you have about 5-6k adena (You shouldn't run out of mana for a while, as you regen after leveling each time). You can keep doing this and kill orc wizards until you get a crystal staff of mana. Use that to regenerate, whenever you're not casting.
    - When you have about 5-6k, use -warp 6 and talk to Lyra. Collect your bounty and continue the contract (not necessary, but why not, right?)
    - Use -warp 3, walk east to the weapons shop, it's about 3 screens. Purcahse a Staff of Sorcery. Equip it.
    - Use -warp 5, go to the item shop, buy 3 (whatever disposable income you have really), nab a greater haste potion if you can (30 minute convenience) and a bunch of healing potions (oranges)
    - walk to the blue skirted NPC, the Teleport NPC, and tell them you want to go to a hunting zone, and search for one that is essentially fire valley beach. Go there.
    - ebolt fire eggs, bomb flowers (from long range) and dragonflys (from the corner of your screen). You'll keep leveling and get some adena.
    - When you've got a few thousand adena, use -warp 1, and walk west into town. The house just south of the eastern town exit, has Gereng. Talk to him and buy your spells. If you have to prioritize, get ice dagger, stalac, shield, frozen cloud, decrease weight, bless armor.
    - Return to Fire Valley beach and find / cliff kill lava golems etc until you get firestorm and fireball. Use potions of wisdom and potions of mana as you get them.
    - As you find spells, learn what levels they are, and when to use them: HERE
    - Keep buying potions to stay alive, and when you've saved about 30-50k adena, head to -warp 5 and walk west of town to the Ivory Tower. /Bookmark Ivory Tower outside it.
    - Head inside and talk to the NPCs inside to buy all the spells you can afford. (You may wish to head to warp 1, Talking Island, to being your quests if you like. The level 15 quest is a shield that will give you +1 INT and help you do a little more damage).
    - talk to the NPC at the stairs on 3F, and head in, unpolymorphed and use teleportation scrolls (ntele) until you get to the stairs on the right side, keep going up until the 5th or 6th floor. Doing so, walk around until you spawn many silouhettes. Use fireball to burn them down. You'll get potions as you do this.
    - Get to level 40 and go learn firestorm if you got it form Firey Valley
    - Now that you're 40, global that you're buying / seeking Holy Walk and Immune to Harm. Most players will be generous enough to hook you up.
    - If no one is able to give this to you, talk to the town teleport NPC and find the option for Training Dungeon 4F. Hunt cerberus until you get immune to harm. You can find small open areas in the dungeon and use potions while you gather and use frozen cloud to mass kill. Save the scrolls of enchant armor and weapon. If you did your 15 quest already, use 3-4 scrolls of enchant armor on the book of magical powers. It's safe to 4.The reason I proposed 3 as a possibility, is you may wish to try and use a blessed scroll of enchant armor at +3 and hope the book becomes +5. It's up to you and how you're feeling about your progress.
    - Once you get immune to harm, and have learned it. Talk to the alchemist in any town and have them make some magic gems for you, with any relics you get. Coupled with Firestorm, this is your bread and butter. Keep trying to buy/acquire holy walk if you still haven't gotten it.
    - Head to -warp 5, and walk east, talk to Brad in town. He'll teleport you to the start of the Ice Queen's Lair. Come in here unpolied, and walk a big circle around the starting room. When you have a sizeable pack, use immune to harm, walk in to the pack, keep using potions and repatedly cast firestorm until everything is dead (mostly). Teleport home, or use -warp 5, meditate and go back. Do this until you're level 45.
    - Now that you're level 45, go to -warp 1, head into talking island and begin your quests. Get through at least the level 15 and 30 quests. Sort out the 45 quest if you've got time.
    - If you need adena, head to warp 2 and kill black knights. They spawn east, north and west-by-north-west of town. Use immune to harm and firestorm. Head back to town and use mediate while you sell stuff to the store. Rinse and repeat until you have enough adena to buy some of the things you want. Save the t-shirts from the black knights and try for +5. Use blessed scrolls of enchant armor to try and go from 5 to 7. Up to you.

Now that you're working on some cash, try and sort out the following (each option depends on your adena on hand):

Ancient Robe (Melissa in Aden will sell scrolls to Forgotten Island. It's a tougher zone, but with pets/summons, and slow movement, you can handle it. Take it slow and learn yoru capability
+7 helm of new king (or helm of magic resistance)
    +5-7 T-shirt
+7 Gloves of new king / +5-7 elemental gloves (+1 STR and MPR)
    +7  Boots of new king
(use your cloak of mana from the 45 quest. Try and make it +5)
(use your book of magical powers, try to make it +5)
Buy / fish for repaired earring
Ogre Belt (Buy or hunt just south of the lawful temple until you get one)

    - At warp 5, you can enter (unpolied) Ice Queen's cave, and just round there (collecting fungus juice as you do it) in the first main room. Use warp 5 and walk to the inn and mediitate. You can use bteles too, to bookmark outside the inn, and right in front of Brad (the NPC for Ice Queen) as you'll always get 1-2 more btele. This is an easy going way to get to level 50.
    - At level 50, go and complete your Crystal Mana Ball quest (follow the guide in LinWeb if you need assistance). This shield gives you +1 INT (which you're used to) and 100mp.
    - Head to Melissa (she's in front of a fruit cart in Aden city, top-middle of the city) and buy a scroll to 10F Tower of Insolence (TOI). Round in the big room juicing potions as needed, move to a corner, immune, use potions and fireball the pack, or if you're feeling braver, just immune, use potions and firestorm within the floor. Do this until 52.

There are of course other ways, but this will help you learn a bunch of different mechanics to help determine what works for you.

Keep checking Caspa Group in Main Land Caves, to get your Merkyor and Baltuzar caps, Ring of Teleportation Control is of great convenience for mages too.

Head to Lastavard to try and get your Dread King Boots and Gloves of Assassin King (for AC, when needed), but generally you want to stack mana regeneration - so long as you can handle the incoming DPS of whatever it is you're doing.

At some point, you're going to want to get a couple of Rings of Magic Resistance (5% rings) from Forgotten Island (Scroll available at Melissa in Aden) and then some highest quality gems, and have Killglance in Aden (a little further north-east of Melissa) make you two Killglance rings. They've got HP, MP hitpoint and mana regeneration too. They're great starter rings, and useable for a long while.

    Grind on!

Thanks for posting this, I haven't played mage for a while and this has helped a lot.  How much approx does mana drain cost, or is there a certain area to hunt that it is most likely to drop?  From what I looked it seemed to be mainly bosses that drop it
